Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard has announced its plans to acquire approximately 270 GetGo stores from retailer Giant Eagle. The multinational store operator, known for its Circle K convenience stores, aims to expand its presence across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana with this strategic move.
Under the agreement, all dedicated GetGo store operations and support team members will be retained by Couche-Tard, according to a news release by Giant Eagle. This acquisition aligns with Giant Eagle's strategy to concentrate on its core supermarket and pharmacy businesses, allowing the company to make strategic investments in its people, stores, and value proposition.
The deal, subject to standard regulatory approval, is expected to be finalized later this year. The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed by Couche-Tard.
GetGo stores come in various formats, including standalone kiosks, fuel stations, and convenience stores that offer made-to-order foods. While the acquisition is pending, the stores will continue to operate as part of Giant Eagle.
Couche-Tard's acquisition of GetGo also guarantees the continuation of the popular "myPerks" loyalty program, which will be available at both Giant Eagle and GetGo locations.
Giant Eagle has recently undergone a change in leadership, with Bill Artman taking over as the CEO, becoming the first non-member of the Shapira family, who were the chain's founders. In recent years, the company has focused on transitioning several stores to its slightly more upscale Market District brand.
With the acquisition of GetGo stores, Alimentation Couche-Tard is poised for further growth in the convenience store industry, solidifying its position as a leading player.
