In a remarkable turn of events, Chris Smelley, the head football coach at Sylacauga High School in Central Alabama, has been located safe after he was reported missing earlier today while kayaking off Grayton Beach in Northwest Florida.
The Walton County Sheriff's Office had received a distress call, stating that Smelley, 37, had gone fishing in his blue and black kayak around 8:30 a.m. and had not been seen since. The authorities immediately launched a search operation, along with the assistance of the South Walton Fire District, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Bay County Sheriff's Office.
After an extensive search effort, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted Smelley around 7:12 p.m., still in his kayak approximately two miles off Grayton Beach. Fortunately, he was in good spirits when found. The authorities contacted a friend via radio, who promptly arrived by boat to pick up Smelley.
The search operation involved jet skis in the water and crews prepared to be out overnight if necessary. Despite the calm waters, the wind direction made it challenging for individuals to return to shore. Smelley was last seen wearing a camo print swimsuit and did not have a phone or life jacket with him.
The community, relieved by Smelley's safe return, has expressed overwhelming joy for his well-being. Known as a tremendous man and a great leader within the community, Smelley's passion for his students has made a significant impact. Sylacauga Football Chaplain Chris Theilacker spoke highly of Smelley, praising his dedication and love for the students.
Chris Smelley, a Tuscaloosa native, has had an impressive athletic background. He was a former University of South Carolina quarterback under coach Steve Spurrier from 2006 to 2008 and also played baseball for the University of Alabama from 2009 to 2010. Smelley and his wife are proud parents of four children.
With his coaching career spanning several schools, including Hillcrest High School, American Christian Academy, and Hoover High School, Smelley has made a profound impact on the lives of many young athletes. His safe return brings immense relief to his colleagues, students, and the football community as a whole.
The exact details surrounding Smelley's unexpected and prolonged kayaking trip remain unclear at this time. However, the focus for now is on his well-being and reuniting him with his loved ones. The authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances leading to his disappearance and subsequent rescue.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions when engaging in water activities. Always remember to have necessary safety equipment, such as life jackets, and inform others about your intended plans and expected return time.
As the Alabama high school football community breathes a collective sigh of relief, they are grateful for the safe return of Chris Smelley, a beloved coach and mentor.
