In a heartbreaking announcement, iconic rock band Aerosmith has revealed that they will be retiring from touring. The band cited vocalist Steven Tyler's vocal injury and his inability to fully recover as the reason for their decision. Taking to their official X account, Aerosmith emphasized their desire to always deliver mind-blowing performances and acknowledged Tyler's unique and irreplaceable vocal talent.
Over the past few months, Tyler has been diligently working towards regaining his voice after sustaining a vocal injury. Despite having the best medical team by his side, the beloved frontman has been struggling. It has become evident that a complete recovery from his vocal injury is not possible, leading Aerosmith to make the difficult choice of retiring from the touring stage.
The band had previously announced their farewell tour, aptly named the "Peace Out" Tour. However, in September, the tour was abruptly postponed due to Tyler's ongoing vocal cord and larynx problems. As the situation persisted, Aerosmith eventually made the decision to cancel all of its 2023 concerts. The band had then rescheduled the tour to resume this September, but unfortunately, Tyler's vocal health has not improved sufficiently.
Tyler's doctor had previously disclosed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, the rocker also suffered a fractured larynx, a condition that necessitates ongoing care and patience. Despite receiving the best available medical treatment, the nature of the fracture has required Tyler to remain diligent in his recovery process.
Aerosmith, comprised of Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton, and drummer Joey Kramer, has been a prominent force in the rock industry since their debut in the early 1970s. With a few lineup changes along the way, the band has released 15 studio albums, the majority of which have achieved platinum status. Their Greatest Hits album, released in 1980, has sold over 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.
The band experienced a significant resurgence with the release of the albums Permanent Vacation (1987) and Pump (1989), both of which spawned multiple Top 10 pop hits. Aerosmith secured their only two No. 1 albums with Get a Grip (1993) and Nine Lives (1997), while their ballad "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," written by Diane Warren for the movie Armageddon, topped the Hot 100 singles chart for four weeks in 1998.
As fans bid farewell to Aerosmith's touring days, the band's legacy will undoubtedly endure as they leave behind an impressive repertoire of rock anthems. While Tyler's vocal injury may have halted their live performances, Aerosmith's contributions to the music world will continue to resonate for generations to come.
