This revelation comes from video game historian Liam Robertson, who has shed light on the behind-the-scenes decisions made by the gaming giant.
It all began with the overwhelming success of the first remake, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. The developers had initially planned to include 3 + 4 as part of the collection. According to a source within Vicarious Visions, they wanted to incorporate handling features from the later games to satisfy fans' nostalgia for the old Tony Hawk's Pro Skater experience.
However, as development progressed, it became apparent that time constraints would prevent the inclusion of 3 + 4 in the initial remake collection. Nevertheless, the idea of releasing a separate remake collection for 3+4 was still on the table.
A pitch for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 was presented to Activision, riding on the momentum of the first remake's success. Unfortunately, Activision reportedly declined the proposal in favor of utilizing Vicarious Visions to support their flagship franchise, Call of Duty. Vicarious Visions had also played a role in the development of the highly anticipated Diablo 2 remake.
Tony Hawk himself confirmed that the plan for a second collection of remakes was in motion until Vicarious Visions was absorbed entirely into Activision. The legendary skater expressed that the dissolution of Vicarious Visions hindered the project's progress, as Activision struggled to find another studio that they had the same level of trust with.
Although other studios were approached for potential pitches on what they would do with the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater title, none were able to convince Activision. As a result, the future of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 remains uncertain.
Only time will tell if Activision will reconsider their decision and find a suitable developer to continue the beloved franchise. Regardless, fans of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series can take solace in the fact that they were able to experience the nostalgia of the first two iconic games with the successful remake.
