The statement from the agency revealed that Sutherland succumbed to a long illness in Miami, Florida.

The news of his death was further confirmed by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, who shared a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly known as Twitter). Alongside an old photo with his father, Kiefer expressed his sorrow and called Donald Sutherland one of the most important actors in the history of film. He praised his father's fearlessness in taking on any role and commended his passion for acting. Kiefer concluded by stating that his father led a life well-lived.

Survived by his wife, Francine Racette, and five children - sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer, and daughter Rachel - Sutherland leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of cinema. The statement from Creative Artists Agency highlighted some of his most memorable performances, citing his breakthrough roles in "The Dirty Dozen" and "M*A*S*H."

With a career spanning six decades, Sutherland captivated audiences in films such as "Klute," "Kelly's Heroes," "Don't Look Now," "Ordinary People," "JFK," "The Eye of The Needle," "Fellini's Casanova," "1900," "The Hunger Games" series, and "Ad Astra," among others. His talent was recognized in 2017 when he received an Honorary Award from the Academy.

In addition to his success on the big screen, Sutherland also made an impact in the world of television. He won a Golden Globe for the television movie "Path to War" and earned both an Emmy Award and another Golden Globe for his performance in the mini-series "Citizen X." His television credits also include notable shows like "The Undoing," "Trust," "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," "Dirty Sexy Money," and "The Pillars of the Earth," among many others.

Born in Saint John, Canada, Sutherland's journey to fame was not without challenges.
