New York Jets' quarterback Aaron Rodgers has described this year's training camp as one of the most challenging in his career, emphasizing the physical demands that have been placed on the team. Head Coach Robert Saleh had previously warned Rodgers to expect a "tough" camp, and with only a few days remaining, the veteran quarterback acknowledged that Saleh has delivered on his promise.
Addressing reporters after practice on Tuesday, Rodgers revealed that this year's camp has been significantly harder than previous ones, stating, "I would say the camp is much harder this year and maybe the hardest in the last seven or eight of my career." The Jets have noticeably increased their practice reps, with Saleh confirming that they have taken 300 more practice reps compared to the same point last year.
Despite concerns about Rodgers' age, as he turns 41 in December, and his recovery from Achilles surgery last September, the organization appears undeterred. Saleh, seeking to turn around the Jets' fortunes after a disappointing 18-33 record in his first three seasons, has instilled a businesslike approach throughout the summer, which players have embraced.
With their 13-year playoff drought, the Jets are under significant pressure to succeed, creating a sense of urgency within the franchise. Rodgers highlighted the various schools of thought when it comes to training camp intensity, but personally, he appreciates Saleh's approach. He remarked, "Some of the older players are enjoying the 'callus' part of training camp, where you're grinding," and believes the hard work will translate into readiness for the upcoming season.
Interestingly, despite the intense training camp, Rodgers received a veteran's rest day on Tuesday. Saleh plans to capitalize on this by ensuring a heavy workload for Rodgers and the starters during the joint practice with the New York Giants on Wednesday. Middle linebacker C.J. Mosley also had a day of rest on Tuesday.
As the preseason comes to a close, the Jets, with a 2-0 record, will face the Giants before opening the regular season against the San Francisco 49ers on "Monday Night Football." Rodgers did not participate in the first two preseason games, and while Saleh has not disclosed his plans, it seems unlikely that he will play against the Giants.
Rodgers expressed contentment with the extra work in camp, stating that it has prepared him for the season. He acknowledged that he is yet to take a hit but feels confident in his physical condition and the progress he has made, highlighting his ability to make plays outside the pocket and extend plays.
Looking back at his first preseason with the Jets, Rodgers noted that he no longer feels the same urgency for a final dress rehearsal. Acknowledging the slight decline in his speed due to age, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett praised Rodgers for his conditioning and the determination he displayed during his Achilles recovery.
The Jets and their fans eagerly await the start of the regular season, hoping that the toughness of this year's training camp will be a catalyst for their success under the guidance of Coach Saleh and veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
