In a stunning display of power, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees smashed his 49th home run of the season in Friday's 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. This remarkable achievement puts him on track to potentially tie his own American League record of 62 home runs in a single season. If he achieves this, Judge will become only the third player in history to have multiple seasons with 60 or more home runs.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone struggled to find the words to describe Judge's extraordinary performance, stating, "It's hard to wrap your head around. I get asked about it all the time. People coming up to me. I'm running out of words to say. You're witnessing greatness. He's kinda better than everyone."
Judge's dominance at the plate is further evident in his impressive 228 OPS+ rating. This statistic measures a player's on-base plus slugging percentage compared to the league average of 100. With a rating of 228, Judge is an astounding 126% better than the average player. In fact, this places him among the top 10 seasons in baseball history, trailing only legendary names such as Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams.
Adding to Judge's well-rounded performance this season, his teammate, Yankee starter Carlos Rodon, praised his ability to hit for average as well. Rodon noted, "I feel like he's more of a complete hitter this year. He's hitting .340, he gets walked at an outrageous clip, and he still manages to inflict damage in just two at-bats, even when the other two result in intentional walks. It's truly impressive."
While comparisons to the likes of Barry Bonds are inevitable, Judge remains humble and focused on the game. "I try not to think about it," he admitted. "Even when they mention the Yankee greats like Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Maris, and Babe Ruth. It's tough to comprehend, so I just don't think about it and keep going."
Teammate Giancarlo Stanton, who also hit a home run for the second consecutive game, believes that we haven't even seen the best of Aaron Judge yet. Stanton confidently stated, "He's done it before, so you can't be surprised. We'll have plenty of time for him to do even more impressive things. Stay the course, we have time."
As the season progresses, fans and players alike eagerly await Judge's next move, wondering just how many records he will continue to obliterate with his incredible power and skill at the plate.
