In a remarkable find, an authentic Rembrandt painting from the 17th century was unearthed in an attic in Maine and recently sold for an astounding $1.4 million. The artwork, titled "Portrait of a Girl," was the highlight of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries' annual Summer Grandeur sale. Sought after by three phone bidders, the masterpiece ultimately found its new home with an anonymous European collector on August 24.

The sale of "Portrait of a Girl" sets a new record for the New England auction house, which described the discovery as a "once-in-a-lifetime" moment. Zebulon Casperson, representing the winning European bidder, expressed his surprise and delight, stating, "Out of all the phone bids I've handled, I never imagined I'd help close a deal for over a million dollars. It feels like a shared victory."

The incredible find occurred during a routine appraisal visit to a private estate in Camden. Not knowing what they would find, Thomaston Place Auction Galleries founder Kaja Veilleux explained, "We often go in blind on house calls." As the auction team explored the attic, they stumbled upon the hidden treasure of "Portrait of a Girl," along with other cherished heirlooms and antiques.

Adding to the painting's provenance, a label attached to the artwork revealed that it had been loaned to the Philadelphia Museum of Art back in 1970 by its then-owner Cary W. Bok, who resided in Camden at the time. This historical context adds to the allure and significance of the piece, further contributing to its record-breaking sale.

The revelation of this Rembrandt painting in an attic in Maine sends shockwaves through the art world. Not only does it emphasize the enduring power and appeal of the Dutch master's works, but it also serves as a reminder of the unexpected places where hidden treasures can be found. It is a testament to the importance of thorough appraisals and the exciting possibility of discovering priceless artworks in the most unexpected locations.

This successful sale marks a significant moment for Thomaston Place Auction Galleries, showcasing their ability to attract esteemed collectors and sell extraordinary pieces. The newfound prominence of "Portrait of a Girl" will undoubtedly cement its place in art history and bring awareness to the indelible talent of Rembrandt van Rijn, solidifying his enduring legacy as one of the greatest artists of all time.
