The catastrophic event has tragically claimed the lives of three people, as confirmed by disaster officials, with concerns that the fatality count may increase due to ongoing heavy rains and storm warnings.
The northeastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand, is the most severely impacted region, accounting for approximately 63% of those evacuated. This year's flooding has already surpassed that of 2014 in terms of the number of people displaced, making it one of the worst flood events in Malaysian history. As a response, the National Disaster Management Agency has established 679 emergency shelters to house the affected populations.
Besides Kelantan, other states suffering from the deluge include Terengganu, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, and Perak. Emergency provisions have been dispatched to the state governments of Terengganu and Kelantan, as per the Prime Minister's office.
Videos and reports reveal extensive damage with cars and homes submerged under water, and residents navigating through waist-deep floods. Thousands of emergency service personnel have been mobilized to aid the stranded and assist in rescue operations.
In neighboring Thailand, the flooding has led six provinces to declare disaster status, impacting over 240,000 households. The Thai Interior Ministry has also engaged the army for rescue missions.
While flooding is not uncommon during Malaysia's monsoon season that begins in November, the scale of this year's deluge brings to mind the devastating floods of 2021, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have reemphasized the importance of timely disaster management and response.
