Guitar and amplifier enthusiasts from around the world turned their attention to London on Wednesday as Dire Straits star Mark Knopfler's collection went under the hammer at Christie's auction house. The highly anticipated event far exceeded expectations, with the items selling for a staggering total of over £8 million.
Knopfler's guitar collection included over 120 guitars and amps, each with its own unique history and significance. A remarkable 25% of the proceeds will be donated to various charities close to Knopfler's heart, showcasing the musician's philanthropic spirit.
The star of the auction was undoubtedly Knopfler's 1959 Vintage Gibson Les Paul Standard, which sold for a remarkable £693,000, setting a new world auction record for this iconic model. It was a defining moment, as the guitar found a new home and continued its legacy in the hands of a fortunate new owner.
Expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming response to the auction, Knopfler described it as "an incredible journey." He expressed his joy in knowing that his beloved instruments would find new players and inspire new songs, all while supporting charitable causes that hold personal significance for him.
The auction attracted registered bidders and buyers hailing from an impressive 61 countries, illustrating the global reach and enduring impact of Knopfler's musical legacy. The final total, including buyer's premium, was confirmed at an awe-inspiring £8,840,160.
Several guitars stood out and exceeded their estimated values. Knopfler's 1988 Pensa-Suhr MK-1, which he played at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday tribute concert, fetched an astonishing £504,000 despite being initially estimated at just £8,000. The Red Schecter Telecaster, used to record Dire Straits' hit song "Walk Of Life," went under the hammer for an impressive £415,800, well above its estimated value of £6,000.
Dire Straits soared to superstardom in the mid-1980s with their hit single "Money for Nothing," a satirical take on the rock excesses of the era. Knopfler's auctioned collection spanned his remarkable 50-year career, generating immense interest and excitement among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The auction also witnessed surprising bidding wars for prized pieces. The guitar used by Knopfler to record and perform "Solid Rock" had a modest estimate of £6,000 but soared to a staggering £277,000. The 1983 Les Paul used to record "Money For Nothing" and "Brothers In Arms," which Knopfler played at Live Aid, far surpassed its estimated price range of £10,000-£15,000, selling for an impressive £592,000. Even Knopfler's first electric-acoustic guitar, with an estimated value of £5,000, fetched an astonishing £126,000.
A significant portion, at least a quarter, of the auction's proceeds will be donated equally among esteemed charities, including the British Red Cross, Tusk, and Brave Hearts of the North East. Additionally, the Teenage Cancer Trust will receive the entirety of the £403,200 raised from the sale of Knopfler's 2021 Gibson Les Paul "gold top" guitar, which was signed by 33 music icons including the late Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood, Sir Brian May, Sting, Sir Ringo Starr, and Bruce Springsteen.
To further demonstrate their commitment to charitable causes, Christie's auction house announced that they would be donating £50,000 to each of the four chosen charities.
Mark Knopfler, along with his younger brother David, bassist John Illsley, and drummer Pick Withers, formed Dire Straits in 1977. Their laid-back, blues-inspired rock music captured the hearts of fans on both sides of the Atlantic, with albums like Communiqué, Love Over Gold, and Making Movies often hailed as their finest works. The band achieved global acclaim with their multi-million-selling album "Brothers in Arms" in 1985, which spawned hit singles such as "Walk Of Life" and "Money For Nothing."
Renowned as one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of all time, Knopfler's signature fluid and cinematic solos, exemplified in songs like "Sultans of Swing" and "Telegraph Road," have left an indelible mark on the world of music.
The extraordinary success of Mark Knopfler's auction serves as a testament to the lasting impact of his musical career and the enduring allure of his iconic guitars. As these cherished instruments find new owners, they will undoubtedly continue to inspire and bring joy through the timeless songs recorded with Mark Knopfler over the years.
