Knopfler's 1988 Pensa-Suhr MK-1, which he played at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday tribute concert, fetched an astonishing £504,000 despite being initially estimated at just £8,000. The Red Schecter Telecaster, used to record Dire Straits' hit song "Walk Of Life," went under the hammer for an impressive £415,800, well above its estimated value of £6,000.

Dire Straits soared to superstardom in the mid-1980s with their hit single "Money for Nothing," a satirical take on the rock excesses of the era. Knopfler's auctioned collection spanned his remarkable 50-year career, generating immense interest and excitement among collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The auction also witnessed surprising bidding wars for prized pieces. A significant portion, at least a quarter, of the auction's proceeds will be donated equally among esteemed charities, including the British Red Cross, Tusk, and Brave Hearts of the North East. Additionally, the Teenage Cancer Trust will receive the entirety of the £403,200 raised from the sale of Knopfler's 2021 Gibson Les Paul "gold top" guitar, which was signed by 33 music icons including the late Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood, Sir Brian May, Sting, Sir Ringo Starr, and Bruce Springsteen.

To further demonstrate their commitment to charitable causes, Christie's auction house announced that they would be donating £50,000 to each of the four chosen charities.
