A North Carolina mother, Tabetha Klein, recently discovered unexpected inconsistencies in her son's ADHD medication dosage, sparking concerns about potential over- or under-dosing. Klein, who regularly transfers her 12-year-old son Noah's medication into clear capsules due to his sensitivity to red 40 dye, noticed that some of the transferred contents only filled half of the replacement capsules during the December prescription.

Expressing her apprehension about the mislabeled dosages, Klein took to TikTok to share her experience, hoping to raise awareness about the issue and find others who may have encountered similar problems. In a video, she showcased two clear capsules containing vastly different levels of medication, with the higher dosage appearing more consistent with the previous month's prescription from a different manufacturer.

The source of the issue remains unclear for Klein, especially considering the ongoing shortage of ADHD medication. She reached out to her pharmacy and the drug manufacturer, but received little feedback on the matter. Undeterred, Klein filed reports with agencies such as the FDA, although she has yet to receive substantive responses beyond acknowledgements of submission.

In a recent update on TikTok, Klein shared that she was able to obtain brand-specific Adderall pills for Noah to ensure consistency, effectively avoiding the varying manufacturers. Since starting the new pills, Klein has noticed a consistent dosage. Her video resonated with viewers, with one person expressing concerns about their own medication not being consistent, while another shared their struggles with a different drug that adversely affected their mental health.

The impact of the inconsistent medication has been noticeable in Noah's behavior, as his school raised concerns about his fluctuating behavior. Teachers have reported instances of him struggling more or less on particular days, with no clear cause identified. They have questioned whether he received his medication that day, noting times when he was "literally bouncing off the walls."

Meal times have unveiled another red flag for Klein, as reduced appetite is a common side effect of stimulant medication. Noah rarely feels hungry during the school day, and while Klein is concerned for his health, she takes it as a sign that the medication is working optimally. She shares that when he does take his medication and subsequently eats his entire lunch and asks for a snack at home, they know the dose is effective. Since transitioning to brand-specific Adderall, Noah's appetite has remained consistently low.

As the investigation into the inconsistent dosages of ADHD medication continues, concerned individuals are urged to report any similar issues they may have encountered. The safety and reliability of medication for individuals with ADHD are paramount, and efforts must be made to address and correct any inconsistencies in the dosing process.
