Consumer Reports Finds Worrying Levels of Lead and Cadmium in Chocolate Products

Consumer Reports, a prominent consumer advocacy group, has recently conducted tests on various chocolate products, revealing concerning levels of lead and cadmium in a significant number of them. With Halloween just around the corner, this news raises concerns about the treats commonly found in trick-or-treat bags as well as households' kitchen cupboards.

In their investigation, Consumer Reports tested a range of chocolate products, including cocoa powder, brownie mixes, dark chocolate bars, milk chocolate bars, chocolate chips, and mixes for hot cocoa, brownies, and chocolate cake. Shockingly, detectable amounts of both lead and cadmium were present in all 48 products tested. Even more troubling is the fact that 16 of these products surpassed the threshold for safe levels of one or both heavy metals.

Highlighting the significance of these findings, Brian Ronholm, CR's director of food policy, emphasized that other brands have managed to produce chocolate products with lower levels of heavy metals, making them safer for consumers. Consequently, Consumer Reports has firmly called upon Hershey Co., the largest chocolate purveyor in the United States, to take immediate action to reduce the presence of toxic metals in their chocolate.

The report from Consumer Reports follows up on a previous study that identified potentially dangerous levels of heavy metals in certain brands of dark chocolate. This time, scientists at the nonprofit advocacy organization expanded their investigation, analyzing different types of chocolate and food items made with cocoa as an ingredient.

In response to the revelations, a spokesperson for Hershey Co. referred to the broader issue of reducing heavy metals in chocolate as an industrywide concern, and not exclusive to their brand. Further comment was redirected to the National Confectioners Association, which emphasized that chocolate and cocoa products are safe to consume and have been enjoyed for centuries. They affirmed that food safety and product quality remain their top priorities, remaining committed to transparency and social responsibility.

The presence of lead and cadmium in chocolate products raises serious health concerns, especially as these treats are often consumed by children. Both lead and cadmium are toxic heavy metals that can harm various organs and systems in the body, particularly the nervous system in children, leading to developmental and cognitive issues.

As the Halloween season approaches, it is crucial for consumers to be aware of these findings and make informed choices about the chocolate products they purchase. Consumer Reports' call for action underscores the need for all chocolate brands to prioritize the reduction of heavy metals in their products, ensuring the safety and well-being of their customers.
