The World Aquatics body has decided to ramp up anti-doping measures for Chinese swimmers participating in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This decision comes after reports in 2021 revealed that 11 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication just before the Tokyo Olympics, though no suspensions were imposed at the time. The swimmers went on to win three gold medals at the Tokyo Games. A subsequent investigation by China attributed the positive tests to food contamination in a hotel kitchen, with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) criticized for accepting the explanation amidst travel restrictions due to the pandemic.

In response to these events, World Aquatics has appointed a panel to review the handling of the case and propose specific actions. The panel specified that athletes, including those from China, would undergo increased testing by the International Testing Agency (ITA) in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics. Chinese swimmers are scheduled to be tested at least eight times this year, with results set to be disclosed before the opening ceremony. This decision aims to rebuild trust within the aquatics community and ensure fair play during the prestigious event.

While some social media users expressed skepticism about the efficacy of increased testing without consequential actions, others praised the effort to counter doping practices in elite sports. The commitment to transparency and athlete communication was also emphasized by the review panel.

As the world awaits the commencement of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the focus on anti-doping measures underscores the dedication to upholding the integrity and fairness of athletic competition on a global stage.
