MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The New York Jets' quarterback situation faced another setback on Sunday as Zach Wilson was forced out of the game against the Miami Dolphins due to a concussion. The Jets initially attributed his departure to dehydration, but later clarified that Wilson had indeed suffered a concussion.
Wilson had a rough start to the game as the Jets' offensive line struggled to contain the Miami front, resulting in him being sacked four times and pressured 12 times in just 16 dropbacks. The rookie quarterback, hoping to build on his exceptional performance last week, was under constant attack, hampering his ability to establish a rhythm.
The difficulties for Wilson began early in the game when he lost a fumble on a strip sack during the first series. The Dolphins quickly capitalized on the turnover, scoring a touchdown to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The game started to slip away from the Jets from that moment on, eventually trailing 24-0 when Wilson was replaced with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter.
After completing only four of his 11 passing attempts for a mere 26 yards, Wilson's day was cut short by the concussion. This disappointing performance came on the heels of his career-best outing against the Houston Texans last week, in which he threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jets had recently decided to start Wilson for the remainder of the season after a two-week benching. However, with their playoff hopes fading, there is now speculation surrounding the potential return of Aaron Rodgers. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Rodgers, who underwent Achilles surgery three months ago, is likely to be medically cleared this week. While his return to the field remains uncertain, it is looking unlikely given the Jets' imminent mathematical elimination from the postseason.
The Jets will have to regroup and address their ongoing issues on the offensive line to provide better protection for their young quarterback. As they await Wilson's recovery from the concussion, the team's focus will turn to evaluating their options for the remaining games of the season and potentially preparing for the return of Aaron Rodgers.
