In an action-packed Week 8 of NFL games, several players had standout performances while others struggled to live up to fantasy expectations. Let's take a closer look at some of the key highlights and disappointments from the weekend's matchups.
Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys emerged as one of the top performers of the week. Facing a previously strong Los Angeles pass defense, Prescott completed an impressive 80% of his pass attempts, throwing for over 300 yards and four touchdowns. This strong outing earned Prescott 28.06 fantasy points and solidifies his position as a must-start in one quarterback leagues. He is now gearing up for a highly anticipated Week 9 showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, whose defense allowed Sam Howell of the Commanders to throw for 397 yards and four touchdowns in Week 8.
Gus Edwards of the Baltimore Ravens showcased his skills as a goal-line option, rushing for three touchdowns on 19 carries. Edwards played a vital role in the Ravens' 31-24 win over the Arizona Cardinals, providing crucial protection for quarterback Lamar Jackson. With Baltimore's offense scoring over 30 points in consecutive games, Edwards is projected to continue receiving double-digit touches against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9. He remains a high-end RB2 with RB1 potential moving forward.
Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints also had a productive week, scoring two total touchdowns in a favorable matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Despite Taysom Hill's two rushing touchdowns, Kamara remains the primary running back for the Saints and maintains a mid-range RB2 floor. His usage as a receiver out of the backfield adds to his fantasy value and creates the potential for an RB1 finish if he finds the end zone.
CeeDee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys demonstrated his importance to the team's offense by delivering an outstanding performance against the Rams. Prescott targeted Lamb 14 times, resulting in 12 receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Although Lamb's inconsistency has raised concerns, his ability to consistently generate fantasy points makes him a must-start with a WR2 floor and WR1 upside.
In a surprising twist, DeAndre Hopkins of the Tennessee Titans had a career day with four receptions for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Will Levis, the Titans' quarterback, targeted Hopkins aggressively, resulting in an average of 21.3 yards per target. Although this level of production may not be sustained every week, Hopkins has an opportunity to continue thriving in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers' vulnerable secondary, positioning him as a high-end WR2 with WR1 potential.
Among the tight ends, Trey McBride of the Arizona Cardinals emerged as the top performer in Week 8. With 10 receptions on 14 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown, McBride showcased his potential, benefitting from Zach Ertz's absence. As Kyler Murray is rumored to be returning soon, McBride's prospects only improve, making him a mid-range TE1 in an offense that heavily relies on the passing game.
On the flip side, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs experienced a rare letdown, finishing as the QB31 for the week. Mahomes struggled, throwing for 241 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. Despite his poor performance, Mahomes remains a locked and loaded QB1 for Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins in Germany.
Tony Pollard of the Dallas Cowboys has failed to meet fantasy expectations, finishing as the RB34 in Week 8. Despite facing a weak Rams run defense, Pollard managed just 53 rushing yards on 12 carries and a mere two receiving yards on one target. Frustrations continue to rise among fantasy managers who invested high draft capital in Pollard, as he has yet to consistently deliver an RB1 ceiling since his strong performance in Week 1.
Similarly, D.K. Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks disappointed fantasy managers once again, finishing with five receptions for 67 yards despite leading the team with 14 targets. Metcalf's overall performance has been underwhelming, and he faces a tough matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9, ranking them as the sixth-toughest wide receiver defense this season.
Dalton Schultz of the Houston Texans experienced a decrease in production, catching just two passes for five yards on five targets against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8. While part of this can be attributed to the defensive battle and game script, Schultz's reliance on touchdowns for value as a TE1 makes him a risky option going forward. With better streaming options available in most leagues, Schultz is currently a fringe TE1 until further notice.
As the 2023 fantasy football season progresses into its second half, the performances of these players will be closely monitored by fantasy managers. Some, like Prescott and Edwards, have established themselves as reliable contributors, while others, such as Mahomes and Pollard, have left managers wanting more. With each passing week, fantasy expectations can shift dramatically, making it crucial for managers to stay informed and make strategic moves to maximize their chances of success.
