UTEP's football program made a significant coaching change on Sunday as they announced the firing of head coach Dana Dimel. Over his six-season tenure, Dimel guided the Miners to a record of 20-49, culminating in a New Mexico Bowl appearance in 2021, the team's first since the 2014 season. However, UTEP's lackluster performance this season, going 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Conference USA play, prompted the decision to seek new leadership.

In a statement released by UTEP's athletic director, Jim Senter expressed gratitude for Dimel's dedication and hard work, acknowledging the improvement made in academic metrics and the minimal off-the-field issues. When Dimel took over, UTEP Football was recovering from a winless season, and he succeeded in building a more competitive team. However, the program's failure to show the necessary improvement and compete for championships led to the conclusion that a change in leadership was necessary for progress moving forward.

Dimel, who is 61 years old, had previously worked as an offensive coordinator for Kansas State under Bill Snyder and had coaching stints at Wyoming and Houston. With an overall FBS head coaching record of 50-88, Dimel experienced four winning seasons throughout his coaching career.

The Miners' 2021 season ended on a disappointing note as they suffered a 42-28 loss to No. 25 Liberty, marking their third consecutive loss to end the season. This outcome likely played a role in the decision to part ways with Dimel, as UTEP looks to make changes and strive for success in the future.

The search is now on for UTEP's next head coach, who will be entrusted with the task of revitalizing the Miners' football program and guiding them towards greater achievements.
