University of Iowa Wrestlers Dominate at Soldier Salute, Nine Advance to Finals

Iowa City, IA - The University of Iowa wrestling team showcased their dominance at the Soldier Salute tournament, as nine Hawkeye wrestlers advanced to the finals at Xtream Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The impressive performance by the Hawkeyes included four wrestlers - Brody Teske, Jared Franek, Michael Caliendo, and Patrick Kennedy - who earned bonus points in the quarterfinals, solidifying their place in the finals.

In the 165-pound finals, a thrilling showdown awaits as Caliendo, ranked seventh in his weight class, goes head-to-head with Kennedy, who holds the 15th rank in the 174-pound division. Kennedy has been on fire throughout the tournament, securing a pin, a technical fall, and a major decision in his three bouts at the Soldier Salute. Meanwhile, Caliendo used a tech. fall to propel past Blaine Brenner from Iowa State in the semifinals with an impressive score of 19-4.

During Session III, four Hawkeyes defeated ranked opponents, further exemplifying their formidable skills. Drake Ayala displayed his resilience by defeating Patrick McKee from Minnesota, ranked 20th, with a close score of 5-4, making a remarkable comeback in the third period.

The top-ranked wrestler in the tournament, Real Woods, continued to dominate as he secured a victory against the 18th-ranked Josh Koderhandt from Navy. Zach Glazier also triumphed in a top-20 matchup, defeating the 19th-ranked Garrett Joles from Minnesota. Woods will now face the fifth-ranked Lachlan McNeil from North Carolina in a highly anticipated final.

Another noteworthy victory came from Caleb Rathjen, who outperformed his own teammate, Victor Voinovich III, ranked eighth at 149, in the semifinals. Rathjen's outstanding skills will surely be put to the test in the finals.

In other weight classes, Joel Jesuroga secured a decisive win against Kaemen Smith from Navy in the 149-pound division, while Carter Martinson triumphed over Christian Stanek from Iowa State in the 157-pound category with a score of 4-1.
