Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has come to the defense of teammate Kadarius Toney following a crucial penalty that negated a potential game-winning play against the Buffalo Bills. In his latest "New Heights" podcast with his brother and Pro Bowl center Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelce expressed unwavering support for Toney and the rest of his offensive teammates.
The incident in question occurred during Sunday's matchup when Toney lined up offsides, nullifying a spectacular lateral pass from Kelce that appeared to give the Chiefs the lead in the closing stages of the game. Despite the setback, Kelce remains steadfast in his belief in Toney's abilities as a player.
"He's one of our best players," Kelce emphasized. "You turn on the film and see what he does with the ball in his hands, and you can't tell me you don't want that guy on your team. Everybody hating on KT right now, I'm not trying to hear that. I'm trusting in 1-9 every time he's out on the field."
Kelce's trust in his teammates extends beyond Toney, as he expressed his ongoing faith in the entire Chiefs offense. Although the unit has struggled to meet its usual high standards through 13 games this season, Kelce highlighted that many of the setbacks were self-inflicted and can be rectified moving forward.
"Penalties in critical moments, turnovers in critical moments... it's frustrating, but we have the guys to be able to get it fixed," Kelce asserted. "We want Chiefs Kingdom to know that we have everybody we need here, and we're going to get it fixed."
While much of the focus has been on Toney's penalty, Kelce pointed out the brilliance of his own lateral pass to his teammate. Kelce revealed that the pass was nearly tipped, with disaster looming if intercepted. Instead, it showcased Kelce's football prowess, accurately finding Toney in a position to potentially score a touchdown.
Regarding the officiating decision, Kelce believes that it falls on him and his teammates to ensure that games are not decided by referees' calls. He stressed the importance of avoiding such situations and expressed his unwavering support for Toney, vowing to pass the ball to him again in a similar opportunity.
"You can't put it in the ref's hands in that position," Kelce emphasized. "If we get that opportunity again, I'm going to throw that right into his chest again. Hopefully, he gets there."
As the Chiefs continue their pursuit of a playoff berth, Kelce's unwavering support for Toney and his offensive teammates will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their collective effort to improve and overcome adversity. With Kelce's leadership and confidence, the Chiefs are determined to rectify their inconsistencies and prove their mettle on the field.
