In a thrilling Christmas Day matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, football fans were treated to a showcase of two dynamic rushers. The first, no surprise, was Christian McCaffrey, the current leader in rushing yards in the NFL. The second was none other than Lamar Jackson, whose timely runs helped the Ravens secure a road victory.

This week, we turn our attention to the quarterback position and highlight the top five rushing quarterbacks in the league right now.

At the top of the list is Josh Allen, a formidable presence reminiscent of Cam Newton. Allen, who stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 237 pounds, is a physical force who never shies away from contact. While his rushing yardage this season is on pace to be his lowest since 2020, Allen remains a dominant threat on the ground. He has scored a career-high 13 rushing touchdowns, including two in the recent win over the Chargers, joining Cam Newton as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 50 career rushing touchdowns.

Next on the list is the ever-evolving Lamar Jackson. While he has focused on improving his passing game this season, Jackson has not abandoned his rushing abilities. He leads all quarterbacks in rushing yards with a staggering 786 yards, and his game-changing runs have repeatedly left opposing defenses in awe. With his improved passing combined with his electrifying rushing, Jackson finds himself back in the MVP conversation and has the Ravens on the verge of clinching the AFC's No. 1 seed.

Joining Jackson as the only other quarterback leading his team in rushing yards is Justin Fields. Known for his big-play potential, Fields has showcased his ability to evade pressure and pick up yards with his legs. He currently leads all quarterbacks in rush yards per game and has demonstrated impressive speed, reaching a top speed of 20.68 miles per hour in a Week 12 sprint. Fields' success relies heavily on the run game as he continues to develop as the center of the Chicago Bears' offense.

Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles has had an up-and-down season, but his consistency in the run game has been a bright spot. Despite struggling in the passing game, Hurts has found success on the ground. He leads all quarterbacks in first downs converted on short-yardage or goal-line situations, utilizing the Eagles' powerful offensive line to his advantage. Hurts has also earned 65 first downs on run plays this season, second among all quarterbacks in the league.

Lastly, we have Patrick Mahomes, known primarily for his exceptional passing skills. However, Mahomes has shown surprising speed and agility, often eluding pressure to make plays with his legs. He has amassed the second-most yards on scrambles this season and has notched 25 first downs on such plays. Though the Kansas City Chiefs' offense has faced challenges, Mahomes remains effective on the ground, leading some to wonder if the team should adopt a more run-pass option strategy.

In a league dominated by passing quarterbacks, these five signal-callers are redefining the role of the rushing quarterback, using their legs to provide a dynamic and game-changing element to their respective offenses. As the regular season comes to a close, their performances will undoubtedly continue to captivate fans and keep defenses on their toes.
