In a stunning performance at UFC 295, Tom Aspinall secured the interim heavyweight title with a first-round knockout victory over Sergei Pavlovich. Aspinall's triumph came as a replacement fight following the withdrawal of undisputed champion Jon Jones due to injury. Now, Aspinall is hoping to convince the UFC to grant him a unification bout against Jones, despite Jones and Stipe Miocic's insistence on facing each other.
Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Aspinall expressed his desire to face Jones, stating, "Right now I'm going to enjoy tonight... But I think we should do Tom Aspinall vs. Jon Jones in Manchester. That is something special, and I'm sure the UFC are going to be on board with that. That would be special."
The suggestion of fighting at London's Wembley Stadium was met with equal enthusiasm by Aspinall, highlighting the incredible opportunity it presents for the British fans. Aspinall's meteoric rise in the UFC has captured the attention of fans worldwide, particularly with his dominant comeback from a knee injury in July, where he finished Marcin Tybura in just 73 seconds.
Aspinall's victory over Pavlovich further solidified his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division. With an impressive record of 7-1 in the UFC, all wins by way of knockout or submission, Aspinall has established himself as a formidable contender.
While he acknowledges the potential wait for Jones to return from injury and settle his business with Miocic, Aspinall remains determined to make the fight happen. He hopes his dominant performance at UFC 295 will convince Jones to postpone retirement for one more fight.
"I don't think I did much wrong for him to be like, 'That's an easy fight,'" Aspinall confidently stated. "I think if I hit anybody square in the face they're going to go to sleep, simple as that. Jon knows that... But I want to fight him, and I think I can win."
Jones, who was closely watching Aspinall's win, took to Twitter to offer his congratulations. "Tom, congratulations on the interim heavyweight championship belt," Jones wrote. "That was an awesome performance."
The exchange did not go unnoticed by Aspinall, who expressed his gratitude for the compliment and seized the opportunity to call out one of his idols.
"I've seen Jon talking nice stuff about me... it's really nice," Aspinall said. "Thank you, Jon, and just give me the opportunity... Give me my dream fight. Let me fight for my legacy now, please."
In addition to Jones, former interim champion Ciryl Gane also commended Aspinall on his victory. However, Gane's congratulations were followed by a call-out from Aspinall.
"That's interesting after I just called him out, went to France, and he turned the fight down," Aspinall revealed. "I think he should fight [Jailton] Almeida. I think them guys should fight each other first and see what happens there."
Aspinall's remarkable rise in the UFC has garnered attention and admiration from both fans and fellow fighters. With his sights set on a dream match against Jon Jones, Aspinall is determined to make his mark and continue his unstoppable journey in the heavyweight division. Whether his wish will be granted remains to be seen, but Aspinall's impressive performances certainly make a strong case for the highly-anticipated showdown.
