Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas has weighed in on the recent fight between WBC champion Tyson Fury and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. The bout took place last Saturday in Saudi Arabia and ended in a split decision, with Fury ultimately emerging as the victor.
Contrary to Ngannou's disagreement with the outcome, Atlas does not see any controversy in Fury's win. Despite being knocked down by Ngannou in Round 3, Fury managed to stand toe to toe with him for all 10 rounds.
During his show, "THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas," Atlas shared his scoring for each round. He gave Fury Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10, with a score of 10-8 in favor of Ngannou for Round 3. Atlas also awarded Ngannou Round 8 and struggled to score Round 7, finally settling on a 10-10 draw. Overall, Atlas's tally favored Fury, citing his activity as the determining factor.
With a final score of 97-93 for Fury, Atlas commented, "And like I said in my comments, lots of posturing, feinting, half jabs, a lot of looking, could have been more even rounds possibly, but I know it's an honest one because I'm saying what I believe."
Fury, on the other hand, denied underestimating Ngannou but faced criticism for appearing off his game. Atlas believes Fury's mental preparation fell short, stating, "Physically he did; he was in good shape. Good enough shape. But mentally he didn't. He didn't." Atlas acknowledged Ngannou's deserving credit but emphasized Fury's compromised mindset, suggesting that Fury may have viewed the fight as a casual endeavor rather than taking it entirely seriously.
While some may view the fight as an upset due to Ngannou's unexpected performance, Atlas's assessment highlights the importance of mental preparedness in the ring. Fury's win may have come with controversy, but Atlas maintains that the heavyweight champion's busier fighting style ultimately secured his victory.
The boxing world waits in anticipation for Fury's next move as he continues to solidify his status as a notable figure in the sport.
