Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt continues to solidify his place among the league's elite as he has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Year by the prestigious 'Committee of 101' for the third time in his career. The talented defender previously won the award in 2020 and 2021, making him one of only seven players in NFL history to achieve this feat.

Watt's stellar performance throughout the 2023 season catapulted him to the top spot once again. Leading the league in sacks with 19, he became the first player ever to lead the NFL in sacks three times. His dominant play also landed him the honor of being named the Steelers' 2023 Most Valuable Player.

Watt's recognition as AFC Defensive Player of the Year further places him among an illustrious group of former Steelers greats who have received the honor, including Joe Greene, Mel Blount, Jack Lambert, Rod Woodson, Greg Lloyd, Carnell Lake, James Harrison, and Troy Polamalu. This accolade solidifies Watt's status as one of the premier defensive players in the franchise's history.

The award, voted on by a national selection committee comprising 101 NFL media members, will be presented at the 54th Annual 101 Awards Gala in March. This prestigious event serves as a platform to recognize the outstanding achievements of NFL players and coaches.

Despite being named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his career, Watt will sadly not be able to participate due to an injury sustained towards the end of the season. However, his impact on the field cannot be denied, as evidenced by his impressive statistics, including a Steelers' record-breaking 81.5 career sacks.

Watt's exceptional defensive prowess extends beyond sacks, as he also ranks first in quarterback hits, tied for second in fumble recoveries, tied for fifth in forced fumbles, and fifth in tackles for a loss. Moreover, he has demonstrated versatility with an interception and a fumble returned for a touchdown.

Recognizing his accomplishments, Watt's older brother, J.J. Watt, spoke highly of his sibling's unwavering determination to continually improve. J.J. Watt noted that even at the highest level, T.J. Watt seeks to nitpick and find ways to enhance his performance, solidifying his dominance on the field.

As the NFL Honors ceremony approaches on February 8th, T.J. Watt remains a leading candidate for the prestigious NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. His outstanding performance throughout the season, combined with his impressive career achievements, position him as a strong contender for this esteemed recognition.

With three AFC Defensive Player of the Year awards under his belt, T.J. Watt continues to solidify his legacy as one of the league's premier defenders. As the 2023 season comes to a close, fans and pundits eagerly await the official announcement of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, where Watt's exceptional abilities and contributions to the game are expected to be recognized.
