In a surprising move, Syracuse University has decided to part ways with head football coach Dino Babers following the Orange's 31-22 loss to Georgia Tech. Babers had been at the helm of the program for several years, but his lackluster record and inconsistent performance ultimately led to his dismissal.
During his tenure, Babers compiled a 41-55 record, with only two winning seasons. This was a disappointing outcome, especially considering his previous success at Bowling Green, where he had a stellar 18-9 record in just two seasons.
Syracuse's decision to let go of Babers comes at a critical moment for the future of the program. While the Orange have experienced periods of above-average success in the past, the next head coach will face the challenging task of rebuilding a program that currently finds itself in a state of disarray. Recruiting in Upstate New York may present some obstacles, but leveraging the transfer portal could help attract the talent necessary to turn things around.
Given the program's potential and its status in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), numerous candidates are expected to be interested in taking on the Syracuse coaching position. Among them is former Mississippi State and Florida coach Dan Mullen, who boasts an impressive track record and has previously been a part of the Syracuse program as a graduate assistant.
Another potential candidate is Sean Lewis, the current offensive coordinator at Colorado. Lewis has previous experience with the Orange, having served as co-offensive coordinator before his stint as head coach at Kent State. His familiarity with the challenges faced by Syracuse could make him a strong contender.
Former Syracuse and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone is another name being considered. While Marrone's record with the Jaguars may not be impressive, he led the team to a division title and a trip to the AFC Championship Game in 2017, which could work in his favor.
Curt Cignetti, the highly successful coach at James Madison University, is also rumored to be in the running for the Syracuse position. With a remarkable record and recent achievements at the FBS level, Cignetti could bring the much-needed stability and success to the Orange.
Jamey Chadwell, the coach of Liberty University, has also emerged as a potential candidate. Chadwell has a proven track record of building successful programs, with his Flames currently ranked No. 22 in the AP Top 25 and boasting a perfect 10-0 record this year.
Finally, Tulane coach Willie Fritz has garnered attention for his impressive accomplishments, including a victory over USC in the Cotton Bowl last season and a No. 9 ranking in the final AP Top 25. With a current 10-1 record and a potential New Year's Six bowl appearance, Fritz could bring much-needed excitement to the Syracuse program.
As Syracuse begins its search for a new head coach, the decision will be critical in determining the trajectory of the Orange football program. With a number of viable candidates, the university will have to carefully consider who is best suited to guide the team back to success.
