The NFL has handed down a severe punishment to Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee following a helmet-to-helmet hit on Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. During the Week 15 game, Kazee's hit left Pittman concussed and abruptly ended the Steelers' season.

In an announcement, the league revealed that Kazee will be suspended for the remainder of the 2023 regular season, as well as any potential playoff games if the Steelers manage to secure a postseason spot. The decision was made by NFL vice president of football operations, Jon Runyan.

The hit in question occurred with 8:49 remaining in the second quarter, as Kazee delivered a forceful blow to the head and neck area of Pittman, who was defenseless at the time. According to Runyan's written statement to Kazee, the safety had an unobstructed path to his opponent and could have avoided the illegal contact. The league deemed Kazee's actions flagrant and emphasized the need for substantial penalties when players repeatedly violate rules intended to protect player safety.

The impact of the hit forced Pittman to leave the game with a concussion, highlighting the potential risks involved in such plays. The NFL's collective bargaining agreement allows Kazee to appeal the suspension, and his agent confirmed that they will pursue that option. Ron Butler, Kazee's agent, argued that defensive players often face a difficult balance between making plays to keep their jobs and avoiding intent to injure.

The 30-year-old Kazee, who is currently in his seventh NFL season and his second with the Steelers, will be sorely missed on the field. He has recorded two interceptions this season, tying him with cornerback Levi Wallace for the team lead. With Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick already ruled out for Week 16 due to a knee injury, and safety Trenton Thompson questionable with a stinger, the Steelers may need to rely on cornerback Patrick Peterson to rotate in at safety.

The suspension serves as a stern reminder of the league's commitment to player safety and reinforces the importance of avoiding dangerous hits like the one delivered by Kazee. As the NFL continues to prioritize the well-being of its players, it remains to be seen how the appeal process will unfold and whether Kazee's suspension will be upheld or revised.
