From 2005 to 2022, Gould solidified his status as one of the best kickers of all time, displaying remarkable accuracy and consistency throughout his 11 seasons where he made at least 85 percent of his kicks.
Although Gould's tenure with the 49ers had its ups and downs, with some challenges along the way, his contributions to the team will never be forgotten. Joining the 49ers in 2017, Gould initially faced some contractual uncertainties, as the team placed the franchise tag on him in February 2019. This led to his request for a trade a few months later.
Despite the hurdles, Gould's time with the 49ers was marked by memorable moments, particularly in the postseason. In the 2019 season, he made two game-winning kicks in December, earning him the prestigious title of Special Teams Player of the month. Gould's poise and accuracy continued in the playoffs, as he remained flawless, successfully converting all of his 15 career postseason kicks. In 2021, he once again showcased his versatility by nailing game-winning field goals, including one from 45 yards.
In the recently concluded 2022 playoffs, Gould displayed his unwavering consistency, delivering four crucial field goals during the games against the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys. His reliable performances undoubtedly played a significant role in the 49ers' success.
Reflecting on his time with the 49ers, Gould expressed his admiration for head coach Kyle Shanahan and the team's culture. In a heartfelt piece for the Player's Tribune, he stated, "A free agent the following season, I headed to San Francisco to join the Niners. It didn't take more than two words to convince me that I wanted to play in that city. Kyle. Shanahan. His personal talent as arguably the best coach in the business, combined with that offense? I had zero hesitation about wanting to be a part of that culture."
When asked about his favorite kick, Gould humorously chose a memorable playoff game against the Green Bay Packers in January 2022. With the game tied 10-10 and only four seconds left on the clock, Gould successfully converted a 45-yard field goal, propelling the 49ers to victory and securing their spot in the NFC Championship.
Robbie Gould's retirement marks the end of an era for the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL. With his impeccable record, he is undeniably a strong candidate for the Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Gould demonstrated the importance of consistency, accuracy, and composure under pressure. His contributions to the sport will be remembered for years to come.
