When Adil Malik, a professional wrestler from east London, was 25 years old, his life took an unexpected turn as he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. However, after three years of battling the disease, Adil emerged victorious and turned his personal struggle into a powerful documentary aimed at helping others facing similar challenges.

According to Cancer Research UK, around a third of new cancer cases in the UK are diagnosed in individuals aged 75 and older. Adil, who was vlogging his fitness journey at the time, started experiencing a loss of appetite. As if that wasn't concerning enough, he also noticed blood in his urine, prompting him to seek medical attention.

Adil's fears were confirmed when he was diagnosed with stage three renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer. Despite breaking down after the diagnosis, his resilience and faith enabled him to face the disease head-on. Determined to share his experiences and provide a warning to other young people, Adil decided to document his journey, capturing the highs and lows.

The documentary, titled "Wrestling with Cancer," not only chronicles Adil's personal battle but also features other young individuals who have fought cancer. It delves into the emotional and physical challenges they encountered, including Adil's own nephrectomy – the surgical removal of a kidney.

Adil's aim with the documentary is to raise awareness, particularly among ethnic minority communities, where he believes there is often a reluctance to seek medical help for serious conditions. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can break the stigma associated with diseases like cancer and encourage people to address any abnormalities in their bodies promptly.

"Wrestling with Cancer" has received recognition worldwide, being showcased at various film festivals in cities such as Orlando, Valencia, and Lisbon. Adil's ultimate goal is to promote greater education on kidney cancer and inform the public about this specific type of cancer.

Today, Adil is back in the wrestling ring, fully recovered, and pursuing his passion. Through his journey of triumph, he hopes to inspire others and continue advocating for early detection and proactive health practices.

If you or someone you know has been affected by cancer, the BBC Action Line offers help and support.
