According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Alexander is being considered for the Patriots' defensive coordinator role under new head coach Jerod Mayo, though he could also secure a position as a position coach even if he doesn't land the coordinator position.
Breer expects the Patriots to make an announcement regarding the defensive coordinator position soon, and Alexander's name is reportedly in the mix. It is believed that DeMarcus Covington is the frontrunner for the role, given his seven years of experience working in the building, including the past five years as a defensive position coach alongside Mayo.
Christian Parker, the Denver Broncos defensive backs coach, and Alexander are also under consideration for coaching positions with the Patriots' defensive staff, alongside Covington.
Alexander joined the Steelers last April as an assistant defensive backs coach, marking his second season with the team, as stated in his bio on their website. Prior to joining the Steelers, he had coaching experience at both the college and NFL levels. He started his coaching career at Arkansas State in 2013 and later worked as an intern with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016 before returning to the college ranks. In 2020, he was hired by the Miami Dolphins as their defensive backs coach but was let go after two seasons following Brian Flores' departure.
During his playing days, Alexander was a second-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft from Boise State. He had stints with several teams, including the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets, appearing in 44 games and starting 30 of them. In five seasons, he amassed 159 tackles and four interceptions.
While Alexander plans to represent the Steelers at the upcoming 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl, where he will coach the West team's linebackers, this could potentially be a stepping stone for him to ascend in the NFL coaching ranks and land a position with the New England Patriots under Mayo.
