The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the upcoming training camp with an eye on solidifying their quarterback position. While Kenny Pickett is expected to enter camp as the starting quarterback, the team is not willing to hand him the job without competition. If Mason Rudolph does not re-sign, which appears increasingly likely, the Steelers are prepared to explore options outside the organization.
ESPN's Adam Schefter recently shared his insights on the Pat McAfee Show, expressing his belief that the Steelers will look to bring in a new quarterback to challenge Pickett for the starting role. Schefter specifically mentioned Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields as a player of interest for the Steelers. He highlighted that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is a big fan of Fields and urged fans to keep that in mind during the offseason.
Ryan Tannehill's name has also been connected with the Steelers, given his previous ties to new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Tannehill had some of his best years while playing under Smith's guidance with the Tennessee Titans. Although concerns about age and regression linger as Tannehill is now 36 years old with a history of injuries, he is viewed as a potential system fit for the Steelers.
Regarding Fields, while the Steelers showed interest in him during the draft process, the likelihood of acquiring him is uncertain. The Bears currently hold the No. 1 overall pick and have their sights set on USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Despite Tomlin's previous interest in Fields, the cost to acquire him may be prohibitive, potentially requiring a first-round pick. Additionally, Fields' fifth-year option is due in May, further complicating a potential trade.
The Steelers are reportedly more inclined to explore less costly options at the quarterback position if they choose to bring in competition. While they still hope to re-sign Rudolph, the decision ultimately lies with him. The team cannot use the franchise tag on Rudolph, and if he desires to play elsewhere, the Steelers are unlikely to prevent him from pursuing other opportunities.
Trading for Fields is viewed as less realistic than some national media outlets suggest. The team president, Art Rooney II, indicated that a blockbuster trade for a quarterback is unlikely. Instead, the Steelers are more likely to consider signing a veteran quarterback such as Tannehill or Jacoby Brissett from the Washington Commanders.
While the Steelers remain in the mix for a new quarterback, the outcome is uncertain. The team is committed to finding the best fit to challenge Pickett for the starting role, but the cost, contractual obligations, and other factors may influence their final decision. Until then, the Steelers will continue to be part of the quarterback conversation as the offseason progresses.
