In a surprising turn of events, the Philadelphia Eagles are set to witness significant changes to their coaching staff as they prepare for the 2024 season. While Nick Sirianni is expected to continue as the head coach, a major makeover is in store for his supporting cast.
One major development involves the departure of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, according to Derrick Gunn. Johnson, who oversaw the NFL's eighth-ranked offense during his first season with the Eagles, struggled to produce consistent results towards the end of the year. The 36-year-old faced difficulties aligning his philosophy with Sirianni's system, causing a disconnect in maximizing quarterback Jalen Hurts' potential. Although Johnson interviewed for head coaching positions with the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans, his departure from Philadelphia seems inevitable. Reports suggest he may find a role elsewhere in an offensive capacity.
Meanwhile, the status of Nick Sirianni as the Eagles' head coach has been officially confirmed. Sirianni will address local reporters alongside Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, putting to rest any speculation surrounding his future with the team. Despite experiencing a disappointing end to the 2023 season, including a blowout playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Sirianni's overall success cannot be overlooked. In his three-year tenure, he has achieved a commendable 34-17 record and secured three consecutive playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl bid in 2022.
The defensive coordinator position is also subject to change, with Ron Rivera emerging as a potential candidate to replace the recently departed Sean Desai. Desai's dismissal came as a surprise after Sirianni stripped him of defensive play-calling duties in December, resulting in a collapse of the team's defense, which became one of the worst in the NFL.
With Johnson's impending departure, there is speculation that current Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter could step in as his replacement. Cooter previously worked with Sirianni as an offensive consultant in 2021 and served as the Jacksonville Jaguars' passing game coordinator in 2022.
As the Philadelphia Eagles navigate through an offseason of staff changes, all eyes will be on Sirianni and his new-look coaching staff as they aim to rebound from a disappointing end to the previous season and rebuild for a successful 2024 campaign.
