In an effort to bolster its special teams performance, Penn State University has announced the hiring of Justin Lustig as the team's new special teams coach. Lustig will also take on the responsibility of coaching outside linebackers and nickelbacks for the Nittany Lions.
Previously serving as the associate head coach and special teams coordinator at Vanderbilt University for the past two seasons, Lustig brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. His tenure at Vanderbilt proved successful, with the Commodores consistently ranking in the top 50 in ESPN's special teams efficiency metric during his tenure.
Last season alone, Vanderbilt was among the select 20 teams to block multiple punts and finished an impressive 11th in net punting. Lustig's coaching prowess was evident in the development of standout players, such as 2018 Lou Groza Award winner Andre Szmyt at Syracuse and 2023 Ray Guy Award finalist Matthew Hayball, along with two-time All-SEC long snapper Wesley Schelling at Vanderbilt.
Lustig steps into the position following the departure of Stacy Collins, who recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Boise State. The Nittany Lions will look to Lustig to build on the success of their special teams unit and provide guidance to the outside linebackers and nickelbacks.
Penn State's decision to bring Lustig on board comes as the team aims to maintain its competitive edge and continue its strong performance on special teams, which is often a pivotal aspect of the game. With Lustig's proven track record and ability to develop top talent, the Nittany Lions are setting themselves up for continued success in these critical areas of the game.
The Nittany Lions community eagerly awaits the upcoming season to witness the impact that Justin Lustig will have on Penn State's special teams and his involvement in coaching the outside linebackers and nickelbacks.
