New England Patriots Consider Former Giants Coordinator for Special Teams Job

The New England Patriots are actively searching for a new coaching staff, and the search has now shifted to the special teams department. According to ESPN sources, the Patriots recently interviewed Thomas McGaughey, the former special teams coordinator for the New York Giants, for the same position.

McGaughey's tenure with the Giants spanned six seasons, working under different coaching regimes. However, after the team's disappointing 6-11 season, McGaughey and several other coaches were relieved of their duties earlier this month.

During his time with the Giants, McGaughey's special teams unit performed moderately, finishing 21st in DVOA and 24th in Rick Gosselin's special teams rankings for the 2023 season.

Prior to his stint with the Giants, McGaughey had an extensive career coaching special teams in the NFL, with a brief three-year break from 2011 to 2013 when he worked at the collegiate level for LSU. He previously served as a special teams coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and Houston Texans.

McGaughey is not the only candidate being considered for the special teams role on Jerod Mayo's coaching staff. The Patriots have also shown interest in interviewing Jeremy Springer, an assistant from the Los Angeles Rams, and have requested an interview with Marquice Williams, the special teams coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.

Last season, the Patriots' special teams unit ranked 28th in DVOA under the guidance of Cam Achord, Joe Judge, and Joe Houston. The underwhelming performance has prompted a thorough evaluation and search for new coaching personnel.

As the Patriots continue their search for a new special teams coordinator, the team looks to make strategic choices that will elevate their performance in the upcoming season.
