In the upcoming NFL playoffs clash, the Green Bay Packers are gearing up to take on the formidable San Francisco 49ers. Fresh off an impressive upset victory against the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers are determined to continue their surprising postseason run.
The 49ers have established themselves as one of the top teams in the league this season, ranking second in total DVOA and power rankings, while finishing third in point differential. However, despite their elite status, the 49ers do have a few weaknesses that the Packers intend to exploit.
Firstly, the Packers plan to target the interior of the 49ers' offensive line. Left guard Aaron Banks and right guard Spencer Burford have struggled this season, with Banks ranking 55th out of 80 guards and Burford sitting at 66th. Meanwhile, substitute right tackle Colton McVivitz has struggled to replace Mike McGlinchey, surrendering 12 sacks and 39 blown blocks. Although the 49ers have a solid offensive scheme, the Packers' defensive coordinator Joe Barry is determined to take advantage of these vulnerabilities.
Another area the Packers plan to exploit is the 49ers' run defense. While on the surface it appears strong, with a ranking of 14th in yards allowed per carry and third in yards allowed per rush, a closer analysis reveals a vulnerability against zone concepts. The 49ers rank 31st in EPA allowed per zone run, compared to their third-place ranking against gap schemes. The Packers, who heavily utilize zone schemes in their run game, are confident that star running back Aaron Jones can make a significant impact on the ground.
Lastly, the Packers aim to test the 49ers' safety group, particularly rookie Ji'Ayir Brown and veteran Tashaun Gipson. When the 49ers faced the Ravens earlier in the season, they struggled in defending against Lamar Jackson's passes, allowing him to complete 9-of-10 attempts for 125 yards and two touchdowns when targeting the safeties. With both Brown and Gipson returning from injuries, the Packers see an opportunity to exploit any lingering weaknesses or limited playing time they may have.
The Packers are well aware of the challenge they face against the talented 49ers, but they believe that by capitalizing on these weaknesses, they can pull off yet another upset victory and keep their playoff dreams alive. The game promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams battle it out for a spot in the next round of the playoffs.
