In a surprising turn of events, the College Football Playoff (CFP) bowl projections have witnessed a significant shakeup despite no major upsets in Week 12. Oregon's dominant 49-13 victory over Arizona State has propelled them to the No. 4 spot, edging out Texas and securing a projected matchup against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.
With three weeks into the CFP Rankings, it has become evident that Texas faces an uphill battle in convincing the committee to jump them over Oregon, especially if the Ducks emerge victorious in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Even their impressive win against Alabama is not enough to outweigh Oregon's growing momentum.
As per the revised projections, Texas is now slated to face Tulane in the Fiesta Bowl, while Washington is set to clash with Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.
Adding to the mix of developments, another CFP contender has suffered a blow with the loss of a key player for the second consecutive week. Last week, Texas experienced a setback with the injury sidelining running back Jonathan Brooks, the nation's seventh-leading rusher. This week, Florida State's quarterback Jordan Travis was carted off the field with a leg injury during the first quarter of their win against North Alabama. At present, there is no official prognosis for Travis, raising concerns about the team's future prospects. However, redshirt junior Tate Rodemaker stepped in and led the Seminoles to an impressive 58-13 victory.
With Rodemaker potentially assuming the starting role going forward, the game against North Alabama served as a valuable opportunity for him to settle into the position. Next week, Florida State faces off against their rival, Florida, coincidentally experiencing their own setback as starting quarterback Graham Mertz suffered a broken collarbone, likely ending his season, in their bitter loss against top-10 Missouri.
Looking ahead, the CFP Selection Committee will not yet consider Travis' injury as they deliberate this week's rankings. The committee's focus is on assessing a team's performance on the field rather than projecting how they might fare without a key player due to injury.
Meanwhile, Michigan faced their toughest challenge of the season in a hard-fought 31-24 victory against Maryland. Prior to this game, the Wolverines had not allowed more than 15 points and had not secured a win by a margin of fewer than nine points. However, their resilience shone through as they secured a 24-15 win against Penn State last week.
The fate of the Big Ten East division will be decided in a highly anticipated matchup as Ohio State makes their way to Ann Arbor, Michigan, this Saturday. The Buckeyes maintained their dominance with a commanding 37-3 victory against Minnesota, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in the coming week.
