Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord has made the decision to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal, as announced on social media Monday. McCord expressed gratitude for his time at Ohio State, calling it an honor to play in the scarlet and gray.

The junior quarterback, who beat out Devin Brown for the starting role in the preseason, started all 12 games this season, finishing with an impressive 11-1 record. McCord's tenure as the starting quarterback, however, came to a disappointing end when the Buckeyes lost to Big Ten conference rival Michigan Wolverines 30-24 in their regular season finale, effectively ruling out their chances of making it to the College Football Playoff.

Prior to this season, McCord served as a backup for CJ Stroud, who was drafted as the second overall pick by the Houston Texans in the 2023 NFL draft. McCord's performance this season included passing for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions, according to Ohio State's official records.

Despite missing out on the opportunity to showcase his full potential at Ohio State, McCord is expected to attract significant attention from other college football programs. The decision to enter the transfer portal opens up new possibilities for McCord, who will now have the opportunity to explore other opportunities for the 2024 season.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, who recruited McCord, now faces a crucial decision regarding the team's quarterback position heading into the next season. Both McCord and Devin Brown were highly regarded four-star recruits, and with incoming freshman Air Noland also considered a promising prospect, Day will need to carefully evaluate his options.

Coach Day spoke about McCord's growth and progress throughout the season, acknowledging his toughness and impressive performance, particularly in the Notre Dame game. However, Day remained non-committal on the starting quarterback for the upcoming Cotton Bowl Classic against the Missouri Tigers on December 29, creating further uncertainty surrounding McCord's long-term prospects with the Buckeyes.

As Ohio State prepares for their bowl game, all eyes will be on Coach Day and his decision regarding the quarterback position. While McCord's time at Ohio State may not have had the same impact as previous quarterbacks like Stroud and Justin Fields, his talent and potential are likely to attract significant interest from programs across the college football landscape.
