Ohio State University has announced the hiring of Bill O'Brien as its new offensive coordinator in a bid to reclaim Big Ten supremacy. The move signifies a significant shift for coach Ryan Day, who will relinquish play-calling duties as he focuses on bolstering the team's talent both on the field and in the coaching staff.

Head coach Ryan Day expressed his delight at adding Bill O'Brien to the coaching staff, emphasizing his extensive knowledge and success at both the NFL and collegiate levels. O'Brien brings a wealth of experience as an offensive coach, having led programs in the NFL and Power 5 conferences, and developed elite players throughout his career. Day believes that O'Brien's presence will strengthen their staff and contribute to teaching and recruiting efforts.

The 54-year-old O'Brien most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots last season, following stints in the same position at Alabama in 2021 and 2022. Furthermore, O'Brien has previous Big Ten experience as the head coach of Penn State from 2012 to 2013, before taking on the role of head coach for the Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020.

In addition to O'Brien's appointment, it was announced that Brian Hartline, an accomplished recruiter and receivers coach, will remain as co-offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. Another member of the offensive staff, Corey Dennis, will be retained, although his specific role is yet to be determined after spending the past four seasons as quarterbacks coach.

The addition of O'Brien is the latest impressive move by Ohio State since its disappointing 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. The team's lackluster offensive performance further highlighted the need for an improved offensive identity heading into the 2024 season.

With star running back TreVeyon Henderson returning for his senior season and talented transfer Quinshon Judkins joining from Ole Miss, Ohio State boasts one of the nation's top backfields. Combined with several key defensive playmakers returning, the Buckeyes aim to adopt the physical and formidable style of recent national champions, Georgia and Michigan.

As for the quarterback position, Kansas State transfer Will Howard is expected to succeed Kyle McCord. While Howard is known for his success, particularly as a passer, O'Brien's elite track record working with quarterbacks, such as Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young at Alabama and former NFL standout Tom Brady in New England, adds a promising dimension to Ohio State's offensive plans.

Looking ahead, Ohio State's long-term strategy for the quarterback position remains uncertain. However, it is worth noting that Alabama freshman Julian Sayin, who committed to the Crimson Tide under O'Brien's tenure as offensive coordinator, could be a potential player to watch as he reportedly plans to enter the transfer portal.

With the addition of Bill O'Brien and the strategic recruitment efforts, Ohio State intends to elevate its offensive prowess and regain its position of prominence within the Big Ten. As the 2024 campaign looms, Buckeyes fans eagerly anticipate a resurgence in performance and a return to conference supremacy.
