NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the 2023 football season on October 26. This announcement comes following the recent passing of junior safety Ronnie Caldwell, which has deeply impacted the team. The university prioritizes the mental health and wellbeing of its student-athletes as the primary reason for this decision.

Ronnie Caldwell, a junior safety from Cedar Park, Texas, played an integral role in the Demon's football team. Despite persevering through an injury, Caldwell remained actively involved with the team, providing coaching support to his fellow defensive backs. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the Natchitoches Police Department.

NSU President Dr. Marcus Jones expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, "Ronnie was a beloved member of our community, and we miss him dearly. While our initial instinct was to return to the field, we have realized the profound pain experienced by our team. In the best interest of our players, coaches, and staff, we have decided to suspend the season, allowing time to mourn, heal, and support Ronnie's family."

In addition to the season cancellation, head coach [Coach Laird] has tendered his resignation. As the team's head coach for six seasons, [Coach Laird] has been an integral part of Northwestern State University's football program. The emotional burden arising from the loss of Ronnie has made it challenging for [Coach Laird] to devote his full attention to his players and the program.

"Due to the loss of Ronnie and the emotional burden it has caused me, I don't feel I can give my all to these players or this program," Laird expressed. "Any coach will tell you that their players become like family, so the loss of Ronnie was like losing a son. I love this program and this university, and I know it will persevere and move forward with the competitive spirit that is at the core of our DNA."

The Director of Athletics, Kevin Bostian, commended Coach Laird's contributions, stating, "We appreciate Coach Laird's long-term investment in Northwestern State football. From his undergraduate days as a record-setting quarterback to his role overseeing the university's alumni office and coaching, he has been a vital member of the team. While we are disappointed that the season cannot be completed, we remain confident that Northwestern State football will have brighter days ahead."

Assistant head coach/defensive coordinator [Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator] will assume the role of interim head coach during the search for a new head coach. The Northwestern State athletic department has already initiated the process to find a suitable candidate to lead the football program.

As the university mourns the loss of Ronnie Caldwell, President Dr. Marcus Jones expressed gratitude for the understanding and support of the team, family, friends, and the entire Northwestern State community during this difficult period.
