Northwestern State University has made the difficult decision to cancel the rest of its 2023 football season in the wake of the tragic shooting death of junior safety, Ronnie Caldwell. The announcement comes as two individuals, including a Demons player, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, the team's head coach, Brad Laird, has stepped down from his position, citing the emotional toll of the loss.

The arrest of Maurice Campbell II, a senior nose tackle, and the charges brought against him, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, and obstruction of justice, have shocked the community. Additionally, Caldwell's roommate, John McIntosh, faces similar gun charges. However, neither has been charged with Caldwell's death as the investigation remains ongoing.

Ronnie Caldwell, a beloved member of the Northwestern State community, was shot multiple times in his apartment near the university's campus in the early morning hours. Despite immediate efforts by the police to provide aid, Caldwell tragically did not survive. The junior from Austin, Texas had shown promise on the football field, starting 10 games after transferring from Tyler Junior College in 2022. Although he had dealt with an injury at the beginning of the 2023 season, Caldwell remained involved with the team in a supportive role.

The cancellation of the matchup against Nicholls shortly after Caldwell's death raised questions about the fate of the remaining games on the schedule. The team did return to action against Southeastern Louisiana, but unfortunately suffered a 37-20 defeat. However, after the arrests of Campbell and McIntosh, Northwestern State football opted to cancel the season entirely, with four games left to play.

In a statement, NSU President Marcus Jones expressed the deep pain and sorrow felt by the team and the university community. He explained that while the initial instinct was to continue playing football as a way to honor Caldwell's memory, it became clear that the emotional impact on the players, coaches, and staff was too significant. Jones emphasized the need to take time to grieve, heal, and support Caldwell's family during this tragic time.

Brad Laird, who had been at the helm of the Demons for six seasons, made the difficult decision to resign from his position. A former Northwestern State quarterback, Laird had previously served as the team's defensive coordinator. In a heartfelt statement, he revealed that the loss of Ronnie and the emotional burden it brought made it challenging for him to fully dedicate himself to the team and program. Laird expressed his love for the university and his confidence that it would overcome this tragedy with the spirit of competition that defines the institution.

Assistant head coach Weston Glaser will step in as the interim head coach, as Northwestern State athletics begins the search for a new head coach to lead the football program.

The Northwestern State community mourns the loss of a talented athlete and beloved member. The cancellation of the football season and the resignation of Coach Laird mark a somber chapter in the university's history. Now, the focus is on healing, supporting one another, and seeking justice for Ronnie Caldwell as the investigation continues.
