In response to a recent sideline altercation involving Philadelphia Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, the National Football League (NFL) has issued a stern warning to all 32 teams. The league sent a memo emphasizing that non-player personnel are strictly prohibited from making physical contact or engaging in taunting or abusive behavior towards opposing players, game officials, or others involved in a game.
The memo states, "(NFL policies) clearly prohibit non-player personnel - coaches, trainers, equipment staff, security staff, or others - from making physical contact with, taunting, or directing abusive or insulting language toward opposing players, game officials, or others involved in a game." It further instructs club personnel to allow coaches and game officials to manage any altercations that may occur, with officials responsible for assessing appropriate penalties.
The NFL has made it unequivocally clear that under no circumstances should club personnel engage with or make physical contact with players or staff from other clubs. Penalties for violating these rules can include ejection, fines, and suspensions without pay. The league has stated its commitment to diligently enforce these rules and hold individuals and clubs accountable.
The incident that sparked the NFL's response occurred during Sunday's game between the Eagles and the 49ers. DiSandro, who serves as the Eagles' head of security and is also a senior advisor to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, put his hands on Greenlaw after the linebacker received an unnecessary roughness penalty for an out-of-bounds hit on Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith. In response, Greenlaw swung at DiSandro, making contact with his face. Both individuals were subsequently ejected from the game.
Following the incident, there has been speculation regarding the potential consequences for DiSandro and the Eagles. A "high-level executive" from another NFL team reportedly predicted that the league will impose "significant punishment" on both DiSandro and the Eagles. The outcome of the incident remains uncertain as the NFL reviews the details of the altercation.
However, some progress towards resolution has already been made. According to reports from The Athletic, DiSandro and Greenlaw have made amends through intermediaries, including 49ers General Manager John Lynch. Greenlaw expressed regret that the altercation escalated to that point and described DiSandro as a "genuine guy" who was well-liked within the 49ers organization.
DiSandro, a native of Philadelphia, has been with the Eagles for an impressive 25 years. However, his longstanding tenure and reputation do not exempt him from potential disciplinary action from the league.
As the NFL's investigation continues, it remains to be seen what actions will be taken against DiSandro and the Eagles organization. Nevertheless, this incident serves as a reminder that both on-field players and off-field personnel are expected to maintain a high standard of conduct and respect within the league.
