The National Football League (NFL) has reportedly fined Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes for their critical comments regarding the officiating during last Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the league took action in response to the duo's remarks.
The controversy arose when officials ruled that Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was offsides on a potential game-winning touchdown with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game. With the Chiefs trailing 20-17, they failed to advance the ball on the following three plays, resulting in a victory for the Bills.
Mahomes, visibly irate on the field immediately after the call, expressed his displeasure with the officiating during his postgame interaction with Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The star quarterback continued to vent his frustration during the subsequent news conference. "I mean they're human, they make mistakes, but it's every week we're talking about something," Mahomes said on December 10. "All I can do is go out there and give everything I have."
Following the game, both Mahomes and Reid initially criticized the officials for the call. Reid stated that receivers typically receive warnings from officials if they are lined up incorrectly and described the situation as "a bit embarrassing." However, in the days that followed, both individuals walked back their comments, with Mahomes acknowledging the need for better sportsmanship in his interaction with Allen.
Responding to the criticism, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the state of officiating during the December League Meeting in Irving, Texas. When asked about the officials' decision to penalize Toney, Goodell defended their actions, stating, "almost everybody, to my knowledge, is acknowledging that the officials were absolutely correct." He emphasized the officials' duty to call fouls and remarked on the difficulty of the job.
Despite the controversy surrounding the officiating, the Chiefs are now focused on their upcoming game against the New England Patriots on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
