The National Football League (NFL) is set to expand its international reach once again, as the league announced on Thursday that several teams will be playing games in London and Munich during the 2024 regular season.
According to the announcement, the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Jacksonville Jaguars have been designated to play international games in London, while the Carolina Panthers will kick off in Munich, Germany. The specific opponents, dates, and kickoff times for these games will be revealed when the full regular-season schedule is released later this spring.
The Bears and Vikings will be playing at different stadiums in London, with the Bears returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they previously played against the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019. The Vikings, on the other hand, will be returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the second time in three seasons after their victory over the New Orleans Saints in 2022.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars will be making their 12th appearance in London as part of their multiyear commitment to play a game in the UK. The team's owner, Shad Khan, expressed excitement for the Jaguars' return to Wembley Stadium, which he referred to as their "home away from home."
In Munich, the Panthers will be playing at Allianz Arena, the home of FC Bayern Munich. This game will mark the NFL's second visit to Germany, following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' victory over the Seattle Seahawks in 2022.
Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's executive vice president of club business, league events, and international, emphasized the league's priority of reaching fans around the world and expressed delight in returning to London and Munich in 2024. O'Reilly stated that the NFL's international presence helps to grow the passion for the game and solidify its position as a truly global sport.
The NFL's international expansion will not stop at London and Munich, as the league also announced plans to play its first-ever game in South America in 2024. Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, will host the historic matchup, with the participating teams set to be named later.
It is worth noting that due to ongoing renovations at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, there will be no matchup there in 2024. However, the NFL has assured that international games will resume at the stadium once the construction is complete.
The announcement of these international games presents exciting opportunities for both the participating NFL teams and the global fan base. With the expansion of international games to new locations and the league's commitment to reaching fans worldwide, the NFL continues to solidify its status as one of the most popular and widely followed sports leagues on the planet.
