In a major announcement before their game against the Washington Commanders, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed that head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas will be retained for the 2024 season. Johnson expressed confidence in the positive strides made by the team under their leadership, highlighting improvements in team culture and the defense.
Speaking to the New York Post, Johnson stated, "My decision is to keep them. I think we've had some very positive moves. The culture of the team is a lot better. The defense is better. The offense needs a few pieces." This decision aligns with the earlier report by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who indicated that the Jets did not show any signs of making significant changes to their top personnel.
The owner's rationale behind this decision appears to be the stability factor, particularly in light of quarterback Aaron Rodgers' injury early in the season. Johnson believes it is best to give the trio of Saleh, Douglas, and Rodgers a full year together before making any future decisions. He emphasized the importance of continuity, stating, "Just to keep the continuity going with Aaron and the team we've got. Like I said a year ago, we need a quarterback. We had a quarterback for four plays. Since then we haven't been able to replace him. If we have a good quarterback, it makes everybody's job easier. It makes the line better, the receivers better."
Johnson's decision also aligns with Rodgers' recent comments supporting Saleh and Douglas. Since the trade for Rodgers, the organization has made moves with the MVP quarterback in mind. The retention of the head coach and general manager, whom Rodgers supports and feels comfortable with, reflects the team's commitment to building a cohesive unit around their star player as they look towards the 2024 season.
With the decision to retain Saleh and Douglas, the New York Jets aim to build upon the progress made under their leadership. As the team focuses on strengthening their offense with the addition of key players, the continuity provided by the presence of a stable coaching staff and front office will be instrumental in achieving the desired turnaround in the upcoming season.
