The hunt for a new defensive coordinator continues for the New York Giants as they set their sights on a rising star in the coaching ranks. After the Buffalo Bills' playoff elimination on Sunday night, the Giants wasted no time in requesting an interview with Bills' linebacker coach Bobby Babich for the vacant position.
Babich, who has been with the Bills since 2017, has a close connection with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. Throughout his tenure with the team, Babich has held various coaching roles, including assistant defensive backs coach, safeties coach, and most recently, linebackers coach since 2022. Although he has never been a defensive coordinator, the Giants see potential in Babich's abilities to take on a more significant role.
Matt Warren of SB Nation's Buffalo Rumblings lauds Babich as a "rising star" in the coaching world. Warren believes that Babich's work with standout players such as Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and Matt Milano showcases his potential for success. Drawing comparisons to Bills' head coach Sean McDermott, who followed a similar career path, Warren suggests that Babich may be groomed for a future defensive coordinator position.
Babich, 40, has been honing his coaching skills since 2006. He previously worked with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2012 and the Cleveland Browns from 2013 to 2015. Notably, his father, Bob Babich, a former head coach at North Dakota State, also served as an assistant alongside his son with the Bills from 2017 to 2021.
While Babich is a strong candidate, he is not the only one being considered by the Giants. Other contenders for the defensive coordinator role include Jerome Henderson, the Giants' defensive backs coach, Anthony Campanile from the Miami Dolphins, Dennard Wilson from the Baltimore Ravens, Shane Bowen from the Tennessee Titans, and Derrick Ansley, the interim defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.
As the Giants continue their search, they will weigh the qualifications, experience, and potential of each candidate. The team aims to find the best match for their defensive needs and build a strong coaching staff capable of taking them to new heights in the upcoming seasons.
