In a move that showcases his trust in his former colleagues, new Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith has officially announced the addition of six on-field assistants from his previous team at Oregon State. Along with several support staffers, Smith is building a coaching staff that he believes will bring success to the Spartans.
The six on-field assistants joining Michigan State from Oregon State include offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren, offensive line coach/run game coordinator Jim Michalczik, running backs coach/assistant head coach Keith Bhonapha, tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Brian Wozniak, secondary coach Blue Adams, and the newest addition, defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa.
Smith is also bringing in familiar faces for his off-field staff, including head strength and conditioning coach Mike McDonald, chief of staff Dan Van Riet, general manager Cole Moore, director of recruiting and player relations Michael Doctor, and director of recruiting communications Austin D'Armond.
However, all of these staff appointments are still subject to the university hiring process, and Smith's appointment as head coach must be formally approved by Michigan State's Board of Trustees.
Jonathan Smith, who spent the last six seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, Oregon State, is currently in the process of filling the remaining four on-field staff positions, with the role of defensive coordinator being the top spot yet to be filled. Additionally, Smith may consider retaining some members of former coach Mel Tucker's staff, such as secondary coach Harlon Barnett and wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins.
In a university press release, Coach Smith expressed his excitement about the experienced coaching staff he has assembled, highlighting their track records of success and ability to develop players. Smith believes they will not only bring football expertise but also build meaningful relationships with the players.
One notable addition to the coaching staff is offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, who played a vital role in reviving quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei's career at Oregon State. With Michigan State having an opening at quarterback due to the departure of three scholarship players, Lindgren's expertise in finding and developing talent will be crucial for the Spartans.
Keith Bhonapha, the running backs coach, brings an impressive coaching resume with championship experience and a history of developing players who went on to play in the NFL. Jim Michalczik, the offensive line coach, is revered for producing tough and physical offensive lines throughout his coaching career.
Blue Adams, the secondary coach, is known for his ability to mentor and develop defensive backs, having coached multiple NFL Draft picks. Brian Wozniak, the tight ends coach, has a deep understanding of the offensive scheme and has successfully developed tight ends who have gone on to be NFL Draft selections. Legi Suiaunoa, the new defensive line coach, helped develop one of the best defensive lines in the Pac-12 during his time at Oregon State.
With this talented coaching staff, Jonathan Smith aims to bring success to the Michigan State football program. As the early signing period draws near, Smith is actively working to finalize his staff and prepare for the upcoming season. Fans eagerly anticipate seeing these new appointments in action and witnessing the impact they will have on the team.
Only time will tell if Coach Smith's confidence in his former Oregon State staff will translate into victories for the Spartans.
