The Dallas Cowboys' victory over the Detroit Lions continues to generate waves of controversy due to a contentious officiating decision. In light of the ensuing backlash, CBS Sports NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore recently shed light on the miscommunication that occurred between referee Brad Allen and Lions player Taylor Decker during the game.

The controversy centered around a call made by Allen, who deemed Decker an ineligible receiver. Steratore, speaking on "The NFL Today," provided insights into the miscommunication between Allen and Decker that led to the controversial ruling.

According to Steratore, the misunderstanding stemmed from Allen assuming that Decker was reporting as an eligible receiver, as he had made eye contact with him prior to the play. Allen then proceeded to inform the defensive line that Decker was eligible. However, the miscommunication occurred shortly after, as Allen allegedly heard Decker reporting as ineligible despite seeing him as eligible.

Decker, in response to the controversial call, stated that he had followed his coach's instructions. "All I really wanna say on it... I did exactly what coach told me to do," Decker expressed after the game. "I went to the ref, said report.... I did what I was told to do, did how we did it in practice all week."

Decker further claimed that Lions head coach Dan Campbell had informed the official about the two-point play prior to kickoff. Campbell, visibly frustrated during his postgame press conference, reiterated the officials' explanation for the penalty. "The explanation was seventy reported," Campbell said. "Two people can't report. I don't want to talk about it, alright. I explained everything, pregame, to a T. Seventy reported, sixty-eight didn't, we threw it to sixty-eight, that was the explanation."

Based on the available information, it appears that a miscommunication between Decker and Allen was at the heart of the contentious call. The fallout from this incident now centers on how the NFL will respond to the situation.

The league will likely conduct a thorough review of the incident to determine any necessary adjustments or clarifications to their officiating procedures. It remains to be seen what actions will be taken to prevent similar miscommunications in the future and to ensure the integrity of the game. As the controversy continues to reverberate, fans and analysts eagerly await the NFL's response to this high-profile incident.
