Michigan State University's football program has scored a major recruiting victory with the addition of Aidan Chiles, a talented transfer quarterback from Oregon State. Chiles, a former four-star prospect, played under Michigan State's new head coach, Jonathan Smith, during his true freshman season at Oregon State. The announcement of Chiles' commitment was made via social media on Thursday, solidifying his midyear addition to the Spartans' roster with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
The acquisition of Chiles is crucial for the Spartans, as all three of their scholarship quarterbacks decided to enter the transfer portal at the conclusion of the season. The departures of redshirt junior Noah Kim, redshirt freshman Katin Houser, and true freshman Sam Leavitt left Michigan State in need of a reliable signal-caller. Fortunately, Smith, who brought six assistant coaches from Oregon State, including offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren, was able to secure the highly sought-after Chiles.
According to 247Sports, Chiles is currently considered the top transfer quarterback available. He officially entered the transfer portal on December 4 and recently visited East Lansing for an official visit. ESPN reports that Chiles expressed his desire to play for Coach Smith, stating, "I came to play for you. Wherever you go, that's where I want to be."
Standing tall at 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, Chiles was ranked as the No. 12 quarterback and No. 152 player overall in the 2023 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. As the lone quarterback and highest-rated member of Oregon State's signing class, Chiles showcased his talent as a true freshman, exhibiting a formidable dual-threat skill set. He completed an impressive 68.5 percent of his passes for 309 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Additionally, he contributed with his legs, rushing for 79 yards and three scores.
With the departures of Kim, Houser, and Leavitt, Chiles is poised to assume the role of the sole scholarship quarterback on Michigan State's roster. However, Coach Smith will undoubtedly look to add depth at the position to ensure a strong foundation for the team. Notably, Smith himself has a background as a quarterback, having gone from a walk-on at Oregon State to a standout starter.
Chiles' arrival comes at a critical time for the Spartans, who experienced a tumultuous season, culminating in coach Mel Tucker's suspension and subsequent firing. Under the interim guidance of Harlon Barnett, Michigan State struggled, losing six consecutive games and finishing the season with a disappointing 4-8 record. The offense, in particular, suffered from inconsistent quarterback play and a lackluster running game, resulting in an average of just 15.9 points per game and the second-lowest total offense ranking in the nation.
The addition of Chiles represents a significant step towards turning the program around for Michigan State. While the team had inconsistent quarterback play since their promising 11-win season, Chiles brings skill, potential, and familiarity with Coach Smith's coaching style. With the support of his new team and the opportunity to make an impact, Chiles aims to contribute to the resurgence of the Spartans' football program.
In the coming seasons, fans will eagerly watch Aidan Chiles take the field wearing the green and white, hoping he can lead Michigan State back to its winning ways.
