LSU coach Brian Kelly has made several changes to the defensive staff, but one assistant who will be retained is John Jancek, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Jancek's specific role moving forward is yet to be determined as Kelly focuses on overhauling the defensive staff.
Originally brought in as a defensive analyst, Jancek, a former defensive coordinator at Georgia and Tennessee, was elevated to an on-field role last spring. However, due to a medical issue faced by defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, Jancek was moved from his position as outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator to coach the defensive line just two days before preseason camp began.
LSU decided to part ways with Lindsey and three other defensive coaches on Wednesday, including second-year defensive coordinator Matt House. Lindsey, who rejoined the team in November but never returned to a full-time role, was not retained.
While it was initially reported by On3 Sports that Jancek would be retained, it remains to be seen what specific position he will hold as Kelly continues to make changes.
During the season, LSU sought assistance from former defensive line coach Pete Jenkins, who joined the team five games into the season. Kelly expressed his belief that the defensive front improved over the second half of the year.
Bob Diaco, a former defensive coordinator for Kelly at Notre Dame, took over Jancek's role as the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator when Lindsey had to step away from the team. However, it is uncertain what Diaco's responsibilities will be moving forward.
As the LSU Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, the team's defensive staff has undergone significant changes under the leadership of Brian Kelly. With the retention of John Jancek, the exact makeup of the defensive staff is yet to be determined, but Kelly remains focused on building a strong defense for the Tigers.
