Lions Make Roster Moves Ahead of Showdown with Cowboys

In preparation for their highly anticipated game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Detroit Lions have made several last-minute adjustments to their roster. These moves include the signing of tight end Anthony Firkser, as well as the elevation of veteran defenders EDGE Bruce Irvin and defensive lineman Tyson Alualu for the game.
Over the past 48 hours, the Lions have been active in restructuring their active roster. They waived cornerback Chase Lucas, activated and subsequently waived fullback Jason Cabinda, and signed kicker Michael Badgley. Additionally, they elevated Irvin and Alualu for Week 17.
With the Lions aiming to include Irvin and Alualu in this week's roster, they faced the challenge of only having two elevation spots available. As a result, they needed an extra spot for Badgley. Given that Badgley had already been elevated twice this season, the Lions had to sign him to the active roster, leaving him with one elevation and two remaining games.
Furthermore, with tight end Brock Wright injured and the Lions typically operating with three tight ends each week, it was crucial to find a way to add Firkser to the roster for the upcoming game against the Cowboys.
Considering the potential return of three defenders from injured reserve next week (C.J. Gardner-Johnson, James Houston, and Alim McNeill), the individual signed to the active roster this week finds themselves in a vulnerable position, possibly facing a cut to make room. When deliberating between Firkser, Irvin, and Alualu, it appears that the Lions believe Firkser would have an easier time passing through waivers than the veterans.
It is worth noting that this marks Irvin's third and final roster elevation of the season. While he will be ineligible for elevation in the regular season finale, he will become eligible again once the Lions enter the postseason.
So why did the Lions make their initial cuts on Thursday? There are two probable reasons. First, they were able to activate Jason Cabinda from injured reserve. Although he was subsequently released, this move accommodated Firkser's signing and prepared for the return of the aforementioned defenders. Cabinda may potentially find a spot on the Lions' practice squad, making him eligible for game-day elevations.
Secondly, by releasing Chase Lucas and Nowaske on Thursday, they took advantage of the opportunity for them to pass through waivers earlier, rather than waiting until after the weekend like Cabinda. While this strategy worked for Lucas, who re-signed with the Lions' practice squad, Nowaske was claimed by the Arizona Cardinals.
While the Lions have completed their roster adjustments for this week, it is expected that we may witness a whole new set of maneuvers next week as they potentially welcome back three players and brace themselves for the playoffs.
