Edwards' head coach, Dave Lovell, had stated that he would prefer Gilbert Burns as the next opponent for Edwards, who lost to Muhammad in his most recent bout at UFC 288.

The original fight between Muhammad and Edwards took place in March 2021 but was ruled a no contest after Edwards accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye, rendering him unable to continue. Since then, Muhammad has been anxious to settle the score and pursue a rematch with Edwards.

However, Lovell's comments regarding his preference for Burns left Muhammad feeling perplexed and accusing Edwards of being scared. Muhammad took to Twitter to express his confidence, stating, "Leon's opinion doesn't matter.. his coach doesn't matter. The only person I care about is Dana and he gave me his word... that's all that matters. We're next, and the fact that they're showing fear only gives me more confidence... you should be afraid."

Despite Muhammad's bold claims, Edwards, who retained his welterweight title in a unanimous decision win over Colby Covington at UFC 296, appeared dismissive of the idea of a rematch with Muhammad at the post-fight news conference. He hinted that it may be the UFC itself that is not interested in scheduling the rematch, suggesting Muhammad must figure out why they "hate" him.

Edwards responded to Muhammad's assertions on Twitter, sarcastically stating, "Lol Belal calm down son, you're the least intimidating person in the organization. I already told UFC I don't mind, I'll fight you next, that's easy work. You just have to figure out why they hate you so much."

Muhammad was declared the No. 1 contender after his victory over Burns in May. However, UFC CEO Dana White's commitment to Muhammad being the next opponent for Edwards is uncertain, as he didn't make any definitive statements following UFC 296.

Fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation from the UFC regarding Edwards' next bout. Whether it will be a rematch with Muhammad or a matchup against Burns remains to be seen. Regardless, it is clear that both fighters are eager to prove themselves in the octagon and settle their unfinished business.
