Bobby Knight, the renowned basketball coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, has died at the age of 83, according to a report by NBC News. Knight, who led the Hoosiers to three NCAA championships, passed away on Wednesday at his home in Bloomington, Indiana, surrounded by his family.

A statement released by his family confirmed the news of Knight's passing. They expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of thoughts and prayers, and requested privacy during this difficult time. The family emphasized their intention to celebrate Knight's life and remember him as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.

Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, Knight was revered as "a legend among coaches." He garnered widespread recognition for his successes with the Indiana University basketball team, where he coached from 1971 to 2000 and secured three NCAA titles.

An accomplished player himself, Knight was part of the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team that clinched the 1960 NCAA championship. He not only excelled at college-level basketball but also made a significant impact on the international stage. In 1984, Knight led the U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team to a gold medal victory at the Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Knight's coaching prowess was acknowledged with numerous accolades, including being named Big Ten coach of the year on five occasions and earning the title of national coach of the year four times. His achievements made him one of only three coaches to achieve the "triple crown" of winning an NCAA title, an NIT title, and an Olympic gold medal.

Born as Robert Knight in Massillon, Ohio, on October 25, 1940, he was widely known as Bob or Bobby. Throughout his career, Knight displayed a remarkable passion for the sport and dedication to his players.

In 1979, Knight faced legal trouble when he was charged with assaulting a police officer in Puerto Rico during a practice session for the U.S. basketball team. Although the incident was controversial, Knight seemed to adopt a lighthearted approach to it during his enshrinement at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

After leaving Indiana, Knight continued to contribute to the basketball world as he coached at Texas Tech from 2001 to 2008. Following his retirement, his son Pat Knight took over as his successor.

The family of Bobby Knight has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Marian University in Indianapolis. They have also expressed appreciation for any donations to charitable organizations in his name.

The basketball community mourns the loss of a legendary figure and will forever remember Bobby Knight as a trailblazing coach who left an indelible mark on the sport.
