Fresh off their Super Bowl LVIII victory, the Kansas City Chiefs are now faced with the task of securing key players for the upcoming seasons. Among the top priorities for General Manager Brett Veach are cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, whose rookie contract has expired, and defensive tackle Chris Jones, whose deal is also up for renegotiation.
During an appearance on the Up & Adams show, Sneed expressed his desire for a substantial payday from the Chiefs. With a smile on his face, he jokingly urged the team to "pay me, pay me." After playing a pivotal role in the Chiefs' back-to-back Super Bowl wins, Sneed's request is not without merit.
Veach has already taken steps to address the situation, extending defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's contract earlier this week. Both Sneed and Jones are crucial pieces of the championship roster and have been key factors in the team's success. Veach has openly acknowledged their importance to the Chiefs' future.
One option being considered is the use of the franchise tag on Sneed, which would buy more time to negotiate a long-term deal. The approximate figure for the franchise tag is expected to be around $18.8 million for a one-year contract. Sneed's exceptional performance throughout the 2023 season, where he consistently shut down opponents' top receivers, makes him a valuable asset.
In 16 games, Sneed recorded impressive statistics, including 78 tackles, a career-high 14 passes defended, and two interceptions. His lockdown coverage against notable receivers such as Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, Ja'Marr Chase, and Davante Adams resulted in the lowest completion percentage (51.0) and passer rating (56.2) when targeted by opposing quarterbacks.
Addressing the challenging task of navigating the team's financial situation, Veach acknowledged the need to prioritize and work through things systematically. With the offseason now underway, securing Sneed and Jones's contracts remain at the top of the Chiefs' agenda.
As Kansas City basks in the glory of their recent championship, the front office is faced with the pivotal task of retaining key players. It is clear that Sneed's exceptional performance and vital contributions to the team make him worthy of a significant contract. Chiefs fans will be eagerly waiting to see whether the team will meet Sneed's demands and secure his services for the long term.
